i just realized i didn’t give the Great Evacuation its own section, so i’m adding some context here basically: the original acadia transfer collapsed following the gestalt/space crisis. the spaceport, space station, and much of the starship fleet were lost, with over 70% of the ships destroyed while dealing with the rogue fleet. the survivors were ultimately redirected toward eden2. eden 2 became humanity’s surviving refuge in space and eventually developed into babylonia, carrying forward the population and infrastructure that managed to reach it. the later great evacuation continued transporting people and crucial infrastructure to babylonia. there were at least six evacuation operations, with the third specifically transporting agricultural and industrial equipment. meanwhile, earth was left increasingly depleted. after the sixth and final evacuation operation, watanabe returned to the surface and found that the evacuation had taken away enormous amounts of resources, technology, and infrastructure, contributing to the collapse of social order. and that’s what ultimately created the defining divide between babylonia and earth. as ballard puts it, the great evacuation essentially “broke the spine of this era in two” one part of humanity went into the sky, while the other remained on the ground [basically the people in power and those with the means made it to Babylonia, while ordinary people were largely left behind on Earth] this is also why hans carries so much guilt. and honestly, as much as those decisions could be seen as a betrayal of humanity, i can understand why they were made. that’s one thing i genuinely love about this game i can understand almost every side of a conflict even the Kurono that i absolutely hate except gabriel hate that mf with my whole heart
