@preschoolvibes: I start my preschool assessments around week two, or as soon as students are comfortable with our routines and can manage free choice centers independently. During center time, instead of pulling a small group, I call one student over at a time and complete the assessment individually. I want to do this early so I have a true baseline of what each child knew when they came to me. I created my own simplified assessment because the state assessments required far more data than I could realistically use in my classroom, especially when I had 22 students in the morning and 22 more in the afternoon. I am not assessing for a grade. I assess to see what they know so I can help them grow. I use the results to choose individual goals, guide my teaching, and plan small groups. Then I repeat the assessment three times throughout the year to see their growth.
