Each trunk rises bare, then bursts into a candelabra of branches holding a dense, flat crown shaped like an upside-down umbrella — often wider than the tree is tall. Cut into the bark, and it weeps a dark red resin the ancients literally called "dragon's blood," used by the Greeks, Romans and Arabs to seal wounds, and later as a dye and even a varnish for violins. That umbrella crown isn't just for show either — in Socotra's bone-dry climate it traps moisture from passing fog and shades the tree's own roots. But the forests are quietly vanishing: almost every tree is old, with barely any young ones, because introduced goats eat the seedlings before they can grow — and these trees add only two or three centimeters a year, so replacing one takes centuries.
