As a beginner pianist, these 7 mistakes will SLOW you down by years. Avoid them: 1. Looking at your hands all the time You train your eyes, not your muscle memory. Learn to feel the keys. 2. Playing too FAST too soon Beginners want to play like pros in week 1. Slow is FAST. If you can't play it slow, you can't play it fast. Use a metronome. 3. Bad posture and stiff wrists Don't hunch. Don't lift your shoulders. Don't play with flat fingers. Keep wrists relaxed and slightly high, fingers curved like you're holding a ball. 4. Only learning with your right hand Your left hand is 50% of piano. Practice left hand alone every day, even if it's boring. 5. Not practicing daily, but practicing 3 hours on Sunday 20 minutes every day > 3 hours once a week. Consistency builds muscle memory. 6. Ignoring music theory and scales You skip scales because they're boring, then wonder why you can't play songs smoothly. Learn C, G, D major scales, chords, and timing. 7. Trying difficult songs too early Stop starting with Beethoven or anime OSTs that are Grade 8 level. Master easy songs first.
