The Apostolic Pardon is not a “get out of hell free” pass, and it doesn’t automatically send someone to heaven. Who can receive it? The Apostolic Pardon is a Catholic grace associated with someone who is baptized and in danger of death, and it is normally given to a Catholic who is properly disposed. A priest cannot simply pronounce it over anyone regardless of their faith or circumstances and make salvation automatic. What about someone who doesn’t believe in God? The Church does not teach that a person can reject God, refuse repentance, receive a priest’s words at the end, and automatically go to heaven. For the Apostolic Pardon to have its intended spiritual effect, the person must be properly disposed—which includes a willingness to turn toward God and away from sin. God’s mercy is enormous, but the Church doesn’t teach that the pardon overrides a person’s free will or lack of repentance. And what about a serial killer? This is where Catholic teaching gets really interesting. Even someone who has committed horrific sins can, in principle, receive God’s forgiveness if they genuinely repent. Think of the criminal crucified beside Jesus: “Jesus, remember me when you come into your kingdom.” Jesus responded: “Today you will be with me in Paradise.” — Luke 23:42–43 The man had committed serious crimes, yet Christ accepted his sincere repentance. But there’s an enormous difference between: “I have committed terrible things, and I am truly sorry and turn to God.” and “I don’t believe in God, I don’t regret what I’ve done, but someone gave me a prayer.” The first can involve genuine conversion and God’s forgiveness. The second isn’t magically transformed by the Apostolic Pardon. One more important distinction Even when someone does receive the Apostolic Pardon, Catholics aren’t saying, “We know for certain this person is now in heaven.” God judges the person’s heart. The Church entrusts the dying person to God’s mercy and gives them every spiritual help available. And that’s actually one of the most beautiful things about Catholic teaching: God’s mercy is available even at the very end of someone’s life—but mercy isn’t the same as a loophole.

the priest I asked to give my mother her last rights had the audacity to ask me if she has had all her sacraments. if I'm asking I know the rules, sorry but it made me super mad and then he gave a blessing to the lady in the next bed. what's wrong with priest these days?

I said the pardon over my dying father a year ago. It is allowed without a priest under certain conditions … the same conditions I found myself when that time drew near… It was so so special, and a moment full of heavens blessing to have been able to do that for him.
