as an animator I HATE when non animators use the term "over animated" because what do you mean by that? are you talking about the squash and stretch? the timing? the posing? the movement style? the physics? are you referring to it being animated on 1s, 2s or 4s? smears frames? impact frames? does the smooth in and out use too many frames? is the movement clunky and not following clear arcs? are they using too many mouth shapes and making it hard to see what a character is saying? Saying something is "over animated" isn't a valid criticism 80% of the time because it doesn't actually specify the aspects of the animation you don't like which again is often a personal choice over a valid technical criticism.

Same thing, kind of happened with the YouTuber daft pina where he would often criticize story animator Youtubers for how they made their videos and then he made his own animated pilot eventually and it was not very good. Like sometimes you see these people that criticize without having the skill to back it up. I know that sounds mean but some people have to be humble sometimes

People forget consistently that pilots are meant to pitch characters and the potential for story. During actual production, those stories and character traits can and do change. But they’re meant to leave you curious for wanting more, which Kiana is very talented in doing. I don’t understand the “overly animated” critique at all. Every time it’s been either serving to show character traits or for exaggerating an action. Which are principals of animation that you learn IN ANIMATION SCHOOL. It’s literally in the textbooks for it

Thank you for expanding more on the slick comment she made discrediting Kiana's animation history & animation itself. Like yes, the whitewashing was horrendous, but the complete disrespect towards animation & the knowledge behind it (ie Kiana's degree & credibility) irked me the most. You don't have to be in animation to critique, but at least get it right in what you're saying!

I think the “over the top” reactions were completely intentional and just a type of humor the poster didn’t understand. I loved it, and thought the comedic timing was on point. But I like that type of humor. It annoyed me with the OP said that it needed comedic relief, as in “having pauses after the humor,” because not only I don’t agree, but also, that’s not at all what comedic relief is? It’s the opposite - having humor in intense scenes. OP was taking on an authoritative tone instead of an opinion, from my interpretation, and yeah, it rubbed me the wrong way.

As an animation student this shit is so funny (and frustrating) to me, like the other day I saw someone post what were clearly layouts and refer to them as storyboards (which is chill and normal like they just didn’t know and its really not that deep) but someone in the comments was all bitchy like “erm actually that’s an animatic” when it clearly wasn’t and the ACTUAL ANIMATIC WAS IN THE TOP CORNER OF THE SCREEN and this is made EVEN FUNNIER by the fact that animatics are JUST STORYBOARDS TIMED OUT SO THEY KINDA SORTA WOULDVE BEEN RIGHT IF IT WAS THE ANIMATIC so yeah a lot of yall need to get tf off your high horse and be nicer to each other ESPECIALLY when you don’t know wtf you’re talking about

Also for the "over animated" critique. I'm currently doing an animation course at uni and my teacher is always telling us to use reference and then exaggerate it or cut out some of the in-between from the reference video. Exaggerating is literally what animation is good at.

The fact that EVERY OTHER INDIE show pilot is met with excitement and interest and the ONE TIME that its black centered and has two black main characters it is criticized to fucking hell and back omfg. THEY HATE US

The only thing I’ve ever called “over animated” is a he recent exiled heavy knight anime because it’s drawn and everyone’s hair and the camera is constantly moving and I’d hazard a guess that’s why at least a 3rd of most episodes is recap

haven't watched the magical girl one yet but I've been in the animation industry for 10 years now and you have no idea how many people run their mouths without ever going to school or working a single day in our industry. It's hilarious how confidently these folks are wrong about everything. The Lovers just came out and a bunch of people made accusations about it and as someone who's both in the industry and who knows the actual directors, it's so easy to debunk the lies. honestly a lot of the "critiques" I've been seeing are just people mad that there's a black magical girl with subtext (for now) suggesting a potential queer relationship. If this was a show about two light skinned boys where one was a ninja but didn't want to be like 70% of the critiques occuring would vanish.
