You did a good job of compassionately explaining why your friend acted the way she did and not excusing her behavior.

What’s even worse, is that she has no idea she’s creating another version of her story by allowing herself to become the terrible thing that happens to the kids in that family..

This is perfect. Inspired me to get up and continue writing my script lol (thank you). Those characters are the most interesting, they do these awful things, which a reasonable person wouldn’t do, but they have their reasons why they’re doing it, and we as readers sympathize with them, even if we wholeheartedly disagree with their actions. THAT is good storytelling right there. ♥️

I am a strong believer in letting your fictional characters f up. like, they have everything they need in order to succeed but they fail all the same because that's what a character flaw is

This is the best part of D&D (or any other collaborative storytelling game) - when the answers your player’s characters come up with are *wild*, because of all of the events they come to the table with and all of the moments you wrote together before this moment. 💙

It’s a really good point a lot of people miss that something can be simultaneously understandable yet not defensible. I think a lot of conversations get shut down when people mistake an expression of empathy or understanding for why a character or person did something as an argument in support of their actions
