@rural.maori.doctors: A love letter to Māori and Pasifika medical students, from two proud MAPAS graduates 🤍 To our Māori and Pasifika medical students, We are writing to you in the middle of your exam week, because we know how hard it is for you all right now. Did you know that we are sooo proud of you? Not only are your friends and families cheering for you — but so are we! There is something we want you to hear before you sit down this week. You do not need to worry about explaining anything to anyone. You don’t have to explain that there is no difference in graduation rates between Māori/Pasifika med students and non-Māori/Pasifika med students. And none in marks either. You don’t have to explain that ten years after graduating, Māori and Pacific doctors are more likely to still be working in Aotearoa. More likely to be rural. More likely to be in underserved communities. More likely to be in general practice. You don’t have to explain any of it because that’s our job! It’s our job to challenge racist rhetoric and harmful stereotypes, because that’s what older siblings do. They protect their younger siblings. And you have hundreds of Māori and Pasifika doctors who have your backs. We got you! The only thing we ask of you, our beloved Māori and Pasifika med students, is that you keep going.
