cancel -9 and 9, pull out an h, cancel h from bottom and top, this gives you 6+h, 6+0 =6…. i dont really know if there is a hard way tbh

Just solve the damn limit. It’s not complicated, and recognizing that it’s the limit definition of the derivative of x^2 takes longer than just solving the limit.

Wouldn't it be simpler to treat the top as a diff of squares to get (3+h+3)(3+h-3)/h, then (6+h)(h)/h, cancel the h's, then 6+0?

This is genuinely a terrible example to use. You say “if this wasn’t equal to 9, you’d have to do it the hard way.” That should tell you that the initial way is very straightforward, so much so that you literally wrote out the expansion and were one step away from the answer. Also I don’t agree with teaching to the exam, teach the material and if they understand they’ll be able to easily solve the question. This weird motion of checking if it fits the assigned form is literally the problem with mathematics today. Just rote memorization of types of problems instead of applying straightforward tools that are intuitive. Lastly, if you replaced 9 with any other number, that resulting problem could still easily be on the AP calc exam, either expecting l’hopitals or just expansion. So your method might make them waste extra time.

Using the derivative to solve such a simple limit is kind of silly when this problem is a really meant to get you in the habit of solving limits that look like the limit definition of the derivative

this is trivial. forget the limit. h is infinitesimal. simplify, then take the standard part of the expression. boom, 6, it takes 15 seconds to calculate.
