A dollar a month. Right now the biggest AI companies on earth are in court over scraping. Anthropic settled with authors for around 1.5 billion dollars last September. The New York Times case against OpenAI has been sitting open since December 2023. Everybody frames it as a copyright fight. It isn't. Strip it all the way down and the websites just want to get paid for what's being taken from them. Now the part almost nobody knows. There's a payment slot that was written into the internet back around 1991 and then sat there unused for over thirty years. In 2025 they switched it on. It's called x402. What that means is you can drop it into a website and any AI agent that wants to scrape your data has to pay a toll to get through. A toll booth on your own information, which flat out did not exist before. So the lawsuits are the loud version of this fight. The quiet version is an entire payment layer getting built underneath the internet while everybody argues in court. And your data is the thing they're arguing about.
