Former Benue State Governor Samuel Ortom has launched a fresh attack on his successor, Governor Hyacinth Alia, accusing his administration of deception, poor accountability and disregard for the rule of law. Speaking during a live interview on ARISE News, Ortom claimed that Benue people were “deceived” by Alia’s background as a Catholic priest and his promise to run the state “like a parish.” He said there was little development outside Makurdi despite increased federal allocations to states following the removal of the petrol subsidy. Ortom also accused the Alia administration of political witch-hunting, recalling how 23 vehicles he said were legitimately allocated to him were seized after he left office. He said he challenged the action in court, won the case, and the court ordered the government to return the vehicles and pay ₦5 million in damages. The former governor further criticised the Alia administration for allegedly failing to convene cross-party stakeholder meetings, describing the state of democracy in Benue as a “sham.” Despite his criticism of the Benue government, Ortom reaffirmed his support for President Bola Tinubu and FCT Minister Nyesom Wike ahead of the 2027 elections, saying he does not regret backing them. The latest remarks come amid an ongoing political dispute between Ortom and Alia, including a state government probe into Ortom’s eight-year administration. #nigerianews #nigerianpolitics #benue
