After I received a mandatory COVID vaccine in China (which wasn’t even RNA) the next day I went straight to my Chinese medicine doctor. Based on my pulse and tongue diagnosis, he prescribed a customized herbal formula intended, from a TCM perspective, to help my body recover and clear what Chinese medicine calls “toxic heat.” My whole family did this. In Chinese medicine the immune response and symptoms that follow vaccination are interpreted as patterns of internal “heat” or “fire.” Practitioners may traditionally use herbs such as honeysuckle flower or forsythia fruit in formulas intended to clear heat. If someone experiences chills, muscle aches or a headache, a TCM practitioner may interpret the pattern differently—as an external pathogen affecting the more superficial layers of the body—and may use warming herbs such as fresh ginger to encourage sweating and push the pathogen out. Chinese medicine works not by directly fighting a specific virus but by enhancing the body’s immune system. But this is important: Chinese medicine is also highly individualized. There is no one “post-vaccine formula.” What is appropriate for one person may be completely wrong for another. A licensed TCM practitioner will look at your symptoms, tongue and pulse before deciding what—if anything—is appropriate.
