The U.S government did do many crimes and horrific acts against the Korean people, but North Korea has a list of crimes to this day that out numbers the deaths of the Americans. South Korea is on AVERAGE richer happier and more prosperous than the north. And North Korea did still have trading partners like China which is still a socialist country to this day. As to the reason for dividing the Korean Peninsula was because to not let their political enemy take it. The 38th parallel was a temporary solution until a independent Korean government could be established. Reason why Korea is still divided to this day is because again political rivalry. As cooperation between the two countries broke down both parties put in dictatorships under their ideological supervision. If thing did not go smoothly and luckily as it did South Korea might be a nation that America would hate.

Western Empire strive for global dominance. To do that you need territory and military bases in strategic locations. A unified Korea would have no need for US military on its soil. Empires create conflicts and division so they can "help" one side
