@profahmedhankir: Nurse your nervous system. 🌧️🏃🏽‍♂️🌴 10K done, Alhamdulillah — under the sweltering night-time heat of San Juan, Puerto Rico. And another 10K this morning, through torrential, almost monsoon-like rain. And somehow, it was exactly what my nervous system needed. I don’t mean to be the bearer of bad news, but I’m not convinced that all wounds completely heal. Some wounds run so deep that no matter how many therapy sessions we attend, how many Zumba classes we complete, or how many kilometres we run, they may leave a scar. That doesn’t mean we stop trying to heal. There is trauma-informed therapy. There is EMDR — and almost everyone I know who has experienced it raves about it. Perhaps one day I’ll experience it myself. But healing also happens through movement. Through prayer. Through nature. Through human connection. Through expressing what hurts rather than burying it. We fall together. We heal together. And we rise together as a community. Our individual experiences are unique and deeply subjective. But there is also a universality to human suffering. To borrow from Jung, perhaps there is something of the collective unconscious here. We all know despair. We all know melancholy. We all know what it means, in one form or another, to hurt. For me, expressing those emotions is cathartic. And there is tremendous solace in shared experience — in discovering that somebody else understands something you thought you were carrying alone. Maybe some of you recognise yourselves in these words. If you do, my heart goes out to you. ❤️‍🩹 Keep nursing your nervous system. Alhamdulillah. 🤲🏽

Very regular physical activity, music, and anything that benefits the mind and body protect your nervous system. Spirituality and the search for meaning will also give you strength. Thank you, sir.

Thank you for your honesty. I want you to know how much your content has helped me. EMDR and Haveling technique has helped me to manage my nervous system more effectively. I say this as a nurse 😊 please ensure you are having rehydration salts after such physical exertion and fluid loss 😁 take care of your mind, heart and in this instance your kidneys ! 🫶🏻

As an MSW clinical student, my colleagues find EMDR effective in providing trauma informed care. In tandem with reinforcing one’s strengths, physiological needs, family connections, and spirituality. Also, from personal experience, forgiveness, and service to those in need helps mend one’s heart. My thoughts and prayers are with you, and may the peace of Jesus Christ be upon you!

I agree!! Not to say that there isn’t hope for myself, because I do believe there is, but some scars can shape us and some just hurt and I just have to accept what’s done is done.

One question Professor: after seeing you running in such difficult weather, why do you suggest that we push our limits? Thanks
