Human remains found in a rural area of San Luis Obispo County have been identified as those of a man who was reported missing 18 years ago. In June 2026, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff’s Office Detective Division began investigating a report of possible human remains in a rural part of the county. Detectives from the Major Crimes and Coroner units, along with forensic specialists, located the remains and determined they were human. A forensic anthropologist examined the remains and identified them as 58-year-old Patrick Jay Valente, who was living in unincorporated Arroyo Grande when family members reported him missing in July 2008. The Sheriff’s Office said the circumstances surrounding Valente’s disappearance in 2008 were considered suspicious and were investigated at the time. Detectives with the Major Crimes Unit are now investigating the newly discovered evidence in connection with the ongoing investigation into Valente’s disappearance. The Sheriff’s Office Search and Rescue team later assisted detectives and other personnel with recovery efforts.
