However, Tatsuki Fujimoto’s dark fantasy masterpiece Chainsaw Man completely dismantles this heroic framework. Set in an alternate, hyper-violent 1990s plagued by Devils born from human fears, the series follows Denji, a destitute teenager who merges with his canine chainsaw devil, Pochita, to become a hybrid devil hunter. Rather than pursuing noble ideals, Chainsaw Man uses its visceral, grindhouse aesthetic to deliver a profound critique of socioeconomic exploitation, systemic trauma, and the fundamental human need for connection At the heart of Chainsaw Man is its radical subversion of what constitutes a "noble" protagonist. Traditional shonen heroes like Naruto Uzumaki aim to become political leaders (Hokage), while One Piece's Luffy aims to be the Pirate King. Denji’s ambitions, by contrast, are intensely modest, material, and carnal: he wants to eat jam on his bread, sleep in a warm bed, and touch a woman. This reduction of human desire to its most primitive elements is a direct critique of economic despair. Before becoming Chainsaw Man, Denji is a victim of generational debt, forced by the Yakuza to sell his own organs—an eye, a kidney, a testicle—just to stay alive. He is a literal cog in a capitalist machine, exploited until he is discarded. When he is finally recruited into the Public Safety Devil Hunters by the enigmatic Makima, his material conditions improve, but his exploitation merely changes form. He enters a system where his worth is still entirely tied to his labor and utility as a weapon. Fujimoto masterfully demonstrates that in a society governed by survival and capital, basic human dignities are treated as luxury rewards rather than inherent rights. The narrative and emotional core of Chainsaw Man’s first major saga centers on the toxic dynamic between Denji and Makima. Makima initially appears as a maternal savior, rescuing Denji from filth and offering him the affection he has craved his entire life. However, she is eventually revealed to be the Control Devil, an ancient entity who embodies the fear of subjugation.
