I've seen crowbars breaking in games, while irl they outlive people even when you abuse them... Also yeah, the extremely quick burn batteries annoy me to no end, since even old ones lasted days if a flashlight was left on...

Honestly, survival games having tools break constantly is way more realistic than you think. In real life, brand-new stuff breaks out of the box all the time. I work around industrial equipment, and we literally had an instructor snap a component on a brand-new CNC router during training and had to get a whole new head unit shipped out. Half the tools in our shop only keep running because they are completely MacGyvered together with random screws and custom wooden brackets just to keep the plastic parts from cracking. Companies just don't make things out of solid metal anymore. If the world actually ended, half the tools you pick up would probably fail on day one unless you have someone around constantly rigging them back together.

I get your complaints but those are not there for realism in the slightest. it's there for game balance/mechanics/resource management as well as tone and feel for the player. maybe they want you to use the flashlight sparingly to keep you scared or make it harder to gain information, but also force/reward exploration by placing batteries or charging stations in places you might not otherwise go. all this works together to create a play experience where you're anxious and running on low information, perfect for a horror game.
