Have you heard of FPIES? And if so, what was your experience? FPIES (Food Protein Induced Enterocolitis Syndrome) often goes undiagnosed or is misdiagnosed as gastro and is not well understood. So what is it? FPIES is a rare, non-IgE mediated gastrointestinal food hypersensitivity disorder that primarily affects infants and young children. What this means is it’s a type of immune reaction to food but the symptoms are very different to your typical allergic reactions. Acute FPIES will appear as recurrent, severe vomiting occurring approximately one to four hours following consumption of a triggering food - but it can be delayed up to 8 hours in some cases. Some little ones may also have additional symptoms such as becoming lethargic, pale, cold, and develop diarrhoea. Common trigger foods include rice, cow’s milk, oat and egg, however they can also include grains, fish, as well as certain fruits and vegetables. While it can be incredibly stressful for families, thankfully the majority of children will outgrow FPIES by around 3 years of age. Have you experienced FPIES in your family? #fpies #fpiesbaby #fpiesawareness #boobtofood #startingsolids
