A lot of good research comes out of interdisciplinary work, it’s very likely that a problem in one discipline has been solved in another discipline, but it’s often hard to know what other fields have solved. To give an example, I took statistical mixture modeling and kernel density estimation from stats. Someone had been using it for a software engineering use and found it really useful for my biology work.
