That doesn’t mean people earning more shouldn’t pay more tax. It does mean there’s a balance. Ideally, you want high-income earners staying here, building businesses, investing and paying large amounts of tax. You probably don’t want to make leaving Australia increasingly attractive. Because if enough of the people paying the largest tax bills leave, the cost doesn’t simply disappear. Someone else ultimately has to carry it. And just to be clear, moving overseas does not automatically make someone a non-resident for Australian tax purposes. Australian tax residency and Australian-sourced income can be much more complicated.
