@rainy.day.weather: 🚨 AN EXTREMELY RARE TORNADO WATCH FOR HAWAII 🌪️ Kauai and Niihau are under a TORNADO WATCH until 4 AM HST Tuesday, September 8, as Hurricane Lowell’s rainbands bring conditions favorable for tornadoes. Surrounding coastal waters and the Kauai Channel are also included. This is the first Hawaii tornado watch we found in Iowa State’s modern archive, which has no known gaps since November 2005. Older records are incomplete, so “first ever” remains unconfirmed. Even tornado WARNINGS are exceptionally uncommon here. Iowa State’s archive contains six separate Hawaii tornado warnings since 2000: one each in 2006, 2008, 2024 and 2025, plus two in 2020. Warnings can be triggered by radar rotation, so these do not represent six confirmed tornadoes. Confirmed tornadoes have occurred on Kauai. NWS’s historical list documents six Kauai County tornado reports between 1950 and October 2018. The most recent listed was an EF0 on December 13, 2008, when a waterspout moved ashore near Pakala Village, leaving a 0.85-mile path and circular damage in a sugarcane field. Tonight, NWS warns that tornadoes could be brief, fast-moving and embedded within Lowell’s rainbands, with the greatest threat near Kauai and Niihau. ⚠️ A WATCH means prepare. If a tornado WARNING is issued for your location, immediately move to a small interior room on the lowest floor of a sturdy building, away from windows.
