@neunearthed: I started this series because I stopped at a few old Balch gravestones in Old Hill Burying Ground. That was literally it. A few stones. Then I went home and started researching the names. And somehow those stones turned into: 16 children in one household. Another 13 children in the next generation. Children dying so young their names were later given to new babies. A mother dying on September 13, 1800. Two daughters dying together the very next day from yellow fever. Another family death on September 15. A woman who lived to 102 years old and personally remembered Timothy Dexter. A man killed after a runaway horse sent a carriage wheel across his neck. A 24-year-old captain who drowned while his wife was pregnant, leaving behind a son born after his death. And one branch of the family tree eventually leading to Adolphus Greely, whose Arctic expedition began with 25 men… and ended with only six survivors. And here’s the ridiculous part: I could keep going. There are more children. More marriages. More deaths. More branches. More records. More people connected to these stones whose lives are sitting inside old books, newspapers, military records, probate files and town documents waiting for somebody to actually put the pieces together. So I’m stopping the Balch series at Part 10… for now. Because I need you guys to tell me something. Do you actually WANT the deeper version of these stories? Not just the 60-second “holy shit” moment. I mean the kind where we open the records, follow every weird branch, figure out who these people really were, look for causes of death, trace descendants, and see just how far one gravestone can take us. Because if enough of you want that… I have an idea for where NE Unearthed goes next. 👀 And judging by what happened when I researched ONE family… we have barely scratched the surface of what’s buried in these old New England cemeteries.
