4 wives are allowed. but god told us that after the war of uhud, when the females were widowed and left helpless, it was commanded for muslim mens to marry them and give them support (but only if they can provide equally, fairly, and honestly) also the approval from first wife if required.

Many people also don't know that this verse of marrying 4 wives came after battle of Uhud, where many Muslim men died leaving behind widows and orphans. There was no such thing as women's shelter or orphanage at that time. So this was the best solution for the unfortunate circumstance.
