The Asian Games will run from September 19 to October 4, while the mandatory WTA 1000 China Open in Beijing is scheduled from September 30 to October 11, creating a direct schedule conflict. Under WTA rules, missing a mandatory WTA 1000 event without an approved exemption can result in financial penalties and a “zero-pointer,” where zero ranking points are awarded for the missed event and her ranking total could be reduced. Because of this, the Philippine Tennis Association (PHILTA) has formally appealed to the WTA, asking for an exemption for Eala due to her national team commitment to the Philippines. As of now, the WTA has yet to respond to PHILTA’s request.
