@drjsemephdrn: 🚨 NURSING SKILL CHECK: Where should you collect a urine specimen from an indwelling Foley catheter? One of the most important things to remember: for a urine culture, collect the specimen from the catheter’s sampling port—not from the drainage bag. Even when the Foley catheter has just been inserted, follow your facility’s policy and proper specimen-collection technique. 🩺 And an important correction/reminder for this demonstration: Gloves should be worn when handling an indwelling urinary catheter, accessing the sampling port, or collecting a urine specimen. 🧤 Gloves are part of Standard Precautions and help protect both the healthcare professional and the patient from exposure to potentially infectious body fluids. Remember: hand hygiene is still required before and after glove use. 📌 Nursing students: Don’t just memorize where to collect the specimen—understand why proper technique matters. Sampling port = specimen collection ✅ Drainage bag = NOT for urine culture ❌. #NursingTips #StudentNurse #RegisteredNurse #NursingMadeSimple #StandardPrecautions
Not all foleys have a “port” to draw urine from and you have to get it from a new bag.

We aren’t allowed to collect urine samples from foleys anymore because our hospital has decided the results are contributing to our CAUTI numbers. They’d rather us remove it, do an I/O and replace the foley which seems like so much more of an infection risk for the patient 🤦🏻♀️

The thing is our facility is so cheap that we don’t have that port on urinary bags.. so I just clamp and let it drain into a cup and make a mess lol

If the whole system is sterile even the bag, what is the rationale NOT to take it from the collection new bag?

For any nurses watching this. As a nurse myself and a pt who has required this being done PLEASE don’t pull fast on the syringe. Not sure if this happens for all pts but someone collecting urine from that port on mine hurt SO MUCH. She pulled the syringe so hard and it killed me. Just take this into account.

do you have these bottles to collect MSU from catheter port? you can attach this directly to the port and pull the plunger back to get a urine culture
