yall its not that it was illegal before to break a lease if you suffered DV, but that the process was entirely determined by the policies of the LANDLORD. now a landlord can not charge or PENALIZE you from breaking a lease early or changing locks if you have documentation of DV. doing this makes it easier for survivors to move becauae they wont have a broken lease on their record and will also have more money to make the move happen!

As they should. I broke a lease for my first apt at 17 after he went to jail for holding a pillow over my face.. he stayed there a while after. 10+ years later they sued me. 😤

I tried to do this in Arkansas and they basically told me I had to deal with it. Wouldn’t even let me transfer to a different unit. Good thing it wasn’t my name on the lease:)
