In 2023, the Broome County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of a shooting at 2208 Route 41 in the Town of Colesville. Law enforcement had discovered that Patrick Proefriedt had fatally shot his newborn baby with a crossbow and injured his wife as well. In March of this year, Proefriedt pled guilty to murder in the second degree, but in 2023, he had pled not guilty. Today in Broome County Court, Judge Cawley sentenced Proefriedt to a minimum of 25 years and a maximum of life in prison. He was sentenced on the charges of murder in the second degree of his daughter Eleanor and attempted murder of his wife.
