I personally interpreted the movie as them choosing to try again, regardless of the past of their relationship. not in the way where they simply ignore it or pretend it didn’t happen, but in the way where they’re fully aware of it, aware of the risk of it possibly happening again, or even falling into a cycle of it repeating. I loved how they found each other again, even after they both had forgotten each other. I can’t lie, I was scared to watch this movie with my partner because of all the things I’ve seen online about it. I was so scared that I decided to watch it by myself first. I loved it. I think it relates to our situation, or well, past situation a lot. Me and my partner have been together for almost a year and a half. during that amount of time, we had our fair share of arguments and issues that seemed endless, almost like the cycle Joel and Clementine had. we ended up breaking up 2 times over it. When we last got back together, it felt like my interpretation of this movie, specifically when clementine kept talking about everything she thought was wrong with herself and Joel just responding with “okay.” I used to think that to love, was to be the best person we possibly can be, to put on a facade that we constantly are trying to prove to not just ourselves but to our significant others. but, we are chosen for a reason. we are chosen because of who we already are, and not just because we are some kind of concept waiting to be completed. sometimes, to love no matter each other’s flaws, really is as accepting it with something like an “okay.” (This is all over the place I’m lowkey like half asleep mb)
