I agree 100% and I’m the very same way. I also feel uncomfortable when people say that.

I fully understand where you’re coming from and I agree with the sentiment that every child deserves so much more… but they are lucky. As a previous foster child, I can’t tell you how many homes we lived in where it was made abundantly clear to us that we are not equal to their biological children. Over 15 years I was placed in over 10 homes. Many of them had separate rules for us - one wouldn’t let us play with their child’s toys, another made us sit at a separate table for dinner, many of them would put us into respite whenever they had a family function. Unfortunately the bar really is that low because some regions are so desperate for carers they turn a blind eye as long as the basic needs are met. So I get it but coming from someone who has experienced both types of carer - do take credit, even if it’s not publicly. Take credit for giving that child what others won’t. Take credit for the sacrifices you make to bring them joy. Take credit for being a positive role model. Take credit for helping to establish secure attachments with adults. Yes, every child deserves it but not every child will receive it. No matter how little or how long they are with you, they will remember for a lifetime the way you made them feel. I can so vividly remember the good ones, even when we were only there for a week or so ❤️

I’m never someone who comments BUT I just have to say thank you sharing! It’s not ‘lucky’! All kids deserve all the things you said. I took my three foster sons and one bio son on a qld trip last year- theme parks, experiences and the coolest holiday park ever. Everyone I told was like ‘omg that so nice you took your foster kids’, no mention of my bio son, the difference made me sad!!! Thank you for sharing ❤️

I absolutely understand people’s intentions with this comment as a foster parent, but hard agree! It’s not lucky at all it’s there childhood, and they only get one! They deserve a childhood just like everyone else 🥰

I think it’s, that yes every child should have this butttt not every child does, foster or biological. So “lucky” might not be the right word but they are in the sense that not every child does get that life

Completely agree!! I have a foster sister, who joined our family at 5 months old and she’s nearly 19! She’s always been our sister, been treated the same and part of our family. Thankfully as she’s grown she does have contact with her biological family too, she is so grateful for the life she has

A previous foster carer here and I always get the comments about them being so lucky to have us and I hate that comment! Totally agree with you on that one. It’s a basic human right not luck. Luck is winning the lottery!

This was one of the biggest things I noticed when we first started caring. We’ll still struggle with it. We also struggle being told we’re great carers when we feel that all we’re doing is the bare minimum. We love them as much as we would our own, we give them every opportunity that we would any other child. We’re regular people who just said yes

Well said! The amount of people who congratulate us for being foster parents is astounding, and I’m like well no - this is their basic human right to feel safe and loved. No child should ever go through what these beautiful children have gone through

they shouldnt be lucky, and loved should be the expectation, but sadly that's not the case. the system needs a massive reassessment, as do the people who foster, it should be about the child, but sadly its not.
