Did you know that out of everything in this post, the "grossest" thing is actually your ear canal’s best friend? 🍯👂 Here is what is really happening inside: How (and Why) Earwax is Made Earwax (cerumen) isn’t dirt—it’s a self-cleaning, protective shield! It’s produced in the outer third of the canal by a blend of secretions from sebaceous and specialized apocrine (ceruminous) glands, mixed with sloughed dead skin cells. • The “Why”: Cerumen is naturally acidic, creating an inhospitable barrier against bacteria, fungal growth, and water. It also traps dust and debris. • The Conveyor Belt: Skin in the canal actually grows outward, naturally carrying old wax out toward the opening as you chew and talk. When you insert a cotton swab, you stop that conveyor belt and ram it back in! --- Why Ear Tubes are Needed In infants and young children, the Eustachian tube is short, floppy, and horizontal. When inflammation or allergies strike, it swells shut, creating negative middle-ear pressure that pulls fluid behind the eardrum (Otitis Media with Effusion). • Trapped fluid acts like an acoustic mute button, dampening sound waves across the ossicles (malleus, incus, stapes). • Tubes are recommended for recurrent acute ear infections, chronic fluid lasting 3+ months, or when temporary conductive hearing loss begins delaying speech and language development. --- How Ear Tubes are Inserted The procedure (tympanostomy/myringotomy) takes under 10–15 minutes: Under light pediatric anesthesia, the ENT uses a microscope to visualize the tympanic membrane. A microscopic slit is made in the front-lower quadrant of the eardrum. Trapped middle-ear fluid is gently suctioned out. A tiny bobbin-shaped tube (grommet) is placed right in the incision. The tube acts as a mechanical pressure-relief valve, equalizing pressure so the middle ear stays ventilated and dry. As the eardrum heals over the next 6–18 months, it naturally pushes the tube out into the canal—no removal required! #PediatricAudiology #EarTubes #Earwax #ParentingTips #HearingHealth
