as the only deaf student in my ASL classes, the hearies always stared blankly at me when I signed and I needed ASL interpreters in my ASL classes so they could understand me. Simple signs like memorize or medicine that at ASL 4 they all knew but they just couldn't understand me. I think it was a combination of xenophobia/Islamophobia/ableism. I am a Deafblind hijabi woman.
