@bald_biologist: Every on this boat thought i knew how to do shit because i am dressed like this. Sir i usually sit at a computer. I don’t know how to use a pipe wrench. #gradschool #marinebiology #stem #research
as an archaeologist i do the opposite, i like to pretend i’m a serious academic but really i just spend a lot of time walking around and digging holes

mine is exploratory geology so we spend multiple weeks tent camping in the desert pulling 16 hour days hiking up and down volcanoes and ridges and exploratory abandoned caves and mines. then take the rocks back to the lab to shoot at with lasers and giant saws amd hammers. then make spreadsheets (yay spreadsheets) then do it all again but on a boat or in Alaska this time. wading through mud, running from bears and men in the woods with guns.

well, since my field work partly consisted of digging holes (soil cores with a bucket auger), digging holes (soil cores in salt marshes which sucked 100x worse), and standing in flooded rain culvert (measuring flow to help build stage/discharge curve and collecting samples where I *was* the safety device 😅) it sure didn't feel like larping at times 😏

When I was getting my degree in agriculture I worked on a farm for about a year and got swamp ass daily in 100 degree heat so I think I earned being able to call myself a blue collar worker during that time 😭
