The reckoning is yours. You are the ones who have contributed most to global warming. You are the ones who wage wars, drop bombs, invade countries, and destroy entire cities. You started the First and Second World Wars, and you are now either pushing the world toward—or have already set in motion—the Third World War. Yet you continue to lecture the rest of the world about civilization, democracy, human rights, and progress. You built the industries that consume the planet’s resources, polluted the atmosphere, and generated enormous profits. And now, when the consequences have become impossible to ignore, the poorest people in Asia and Africa are expected to pay the price. The irony is staggering: those who contributed the most to the problem are often the ones telling those who contributed the least how they should live. You did not inherit an uninhabitable world.
