8-month-old suddenly waking multiple times a night after sleeping well for weeks. Not hunger. Not teeth. Object permanence just switched on — and it changes everything about how they experience sleep. ⠀ 1️⃣ Object permanence is the understanding that things continue to exist even when you cannot see them. Before 6 to 8 months, when a baby falls asleep in your arms and wakes in a dark room alone, the arms are gone — and so are you. There is no concept of you existing elsewhere. After object permanence develops, the baby wakes in the dark, understands that you exist somewhere, and cries specifically to call you back. It is a developmental milestone that produces a sleep disruption. ⠀ 2️⃣ The 8-month regression is not a regression — it is a progression. Cognitive development, motor skill acquisition (pulling to stand, crawling), and the development of separation anxiety all peak at the same 7 to 9 month window. The sleep disruption is a symptom of a brain that is developing rapidly, not one that is going backward. ⠀ 3️⃣ The response strategy: separation anxiety responds to predictability. A baby who experiences a consistent, calm, short bedtime routine — same sequence, same room, same caregiver — builds confidence that predictable things lead to safe outcomes. The anxiety reduces as the routine becomes the signal: this always happens before sleep, and sleep is always followed by you coming back. ⠀ 4️⃣ What makes it worse: co-sleeping during the peak if you were not co-sleeping before, or responding to every arousal with a feed when hunger was not the issue before. These create new associations during a sensitive period. The associations formed at 8 months tend to persist. Keep the response consistent with what you want the pattern to be at 12 months. ⠀ This is the exact reason I started using an app called Napcue. It learns my baby's real patterns, tracks wake windows automatically, and gives me a heads up when the sleepy window is about to open so we're not crashing past it. Bedtime went from feeling like a guessing game to being a quiet notification on my phone. ⠀ Link in bio @napcueapp 💜 #babysleep #8monthregression #objectpermanence #babysleeptips #newmom
