Welcome back to the grow along. This week we’re sowing our tomatoes, basil and leeks. Tomato and basil seeds can be sown in the same way. Sow your seeds thinly onto a tray (or module tray) of moist compost & cover with half a centimetre of compost. Keep them somewhere warm to germinate, ideally between 18 and 30 degrees C. Both tomatoes and basil need heat and they won’t tolerate the cold at all, so once germinated keep giving them as much heat and light as possible. Not below 7C, and not below 15C for prolonged periods. This normally means keeping them in the house in the sunniest spot you can, ideally a south facing windowsill. We’ll be potting these up in about 4-6 weeks time and moving into the greenhouse (so end April they will go out into greenhouse) but make sure you check your local weather forecast for cold nights. For leeks, I multisow mine into module trays about 1cm deep and plant out as a clump. They don’t need much heat to germinate, only around 10 degrees. so can be put into a cold frame or greenhouse straight away. We’ll be planting these out in May/June. #tomatoes #selfsufficient #gyo #growyourown #growyourownfood #homestead #smallholding #garden #lovegardening #kitchengarden #veggarden #plants #igrewthis #ediblegarden #gardendesign #spreadsheets
