But she had another dream: becoming a flight attendant. In January 2001, at age 33, she completed training with United Airlines and began a new chapter in her life. Just eight months later, on September 11, CeeCee was working aboard United Airlines Flight 93 from Newark to San Francisco when the aircraft was hijacked. At 9:47 a.m., she called home. Her husband, Lorne, didn’t answer, so she left a heartbreaking message telling him the plane had been hijacked, asking him to tell her children she loved them and saying she hoped to see his face again. She ended simply: “I love you. Good-bye.” Minutes later, CeeCee managed to reach Lorne. The couple prayed together as passengers and crew prepared to fight back. According to Lorne’s recollection, her final words included: “We’re getting ready to do it now. It’s happening!” At 9:57 a.m., passengers and crew began their attempt to retake the aircraft. Flight 93 crashed near Shanksville, Pennsylvania, at 10:03 a.m., killing everyone aboard. The plane had been heading toward Washington, D.C.; the passengers’ and crew’s resistance prevented it from reaching its intended target.
