Two men went into the restrooms at Seattle’s iconic Space Needle then came out wearing helmets and jumped off the 605-feet (184m) high observation tower. The men, who purchased tickets to enter the tower on Friday evening, are seen in video climbing over a glass window, then flipping off the structure and parachuting to the ground just before 9pm as other visitors watch on. It is not clear where the men landed, although one media outlet reportedly that one parachuter landed on the roof of the Hyatt hotel. Another was thought to have landed near the Seattle Centre. Detective Brian Pritchard of Seattle Police said: “Both suspects approached the glass window facing northbound, running and jumping over to the opposite side of the glass,” he said, adding that the pair then did a backflip off the ledge. The authorities have not identified the jumpers, who were described as white men in their late 20s. They each face a charge of criminal trespassing, a misdemeanour, Mr Pritchard said. The Space Needle was the tallest building in the city when it was built for the 1962 World’s Fair, but dozens of buildings have since surpassed it. The structure has a saucer-shaped observation deck that provides visitors with 360-degree views, including of downtown Seattle. Mr Pritchard said unplanned jumps from the Space Needle were uncommon. However, he said in November 1996, there was a four-person authorised jump in which one of the jumpers was injured.
