@rdusg: At the last General Election, Singaporeans gave Lawrence Wong and the PAP a resounding mandate: 65.57% of the vote and 87 out of 97 elected seats in Parliament. Barely over a year later, the Government is using that overwhelming majority to approve higher salaries for its ministers. Contrast that with 2011. After the PAP suffered its worst electoral result since independence and lost Aljunied GRC—the first GRC it had ever lost—it set up a review of political salaries. About a year later, ministerial salaries were cut. That is the difference. In 2011, public anger over excessive ministerial pay forced the PAP to cut. In 2026, after an overwhelming electoral endorsement, it has concluded it can raise ministers’ pay again. | The Prime Minister’s salary benchmark rises from S$2.2 million to S$3.6 million—a S$1.4 million increase. Does that shock you? Existing political office-holders will receive a one-off adjustment of up to 9%, while the revised framework takes effect on 15 October. PM Wong says he will donate his own increase for five years to suitable good causes. But the basic question remains: why should taxpayer money be paid to him first, for him to decide where it goes? This kind of “transparency”—who does not want it? Every worker wants that same openness and transparency. But that is precisely the power the working class does not have. Wong can make the case for a better pay package for himself and his ministerial team. PAP MPs have the overwhelming numbers to approve it. And ministers receive the benefit. Does a working-class Singaporean have that power: to secure his job, raise his pay, or protect his livelihood?
