Shoot this staircase from eye level and you get a nice picture of an old building with a person somewhere in it. Drop to a metre off the ground and the steps stack, the wall goes up out of frame, and suddenly there is scale. The trade is that low angles are unforgiving about everything on the floor. Cigarette ends, a drain cover, a scrap of tape someone left behind. We spend a genuinely embarrassing amount of time clearing the ground before anyone gets into a dress. Pink against that stone was the right call and not an obvious one. The wall is warm grey with a lot of ochre in it, and most cool colours go flat against it. A saturated pink has enough warmth to sit in the same family without matching. Old town Rhodes rewards patience more than it rewards good weather.
