@theestherideh: God is not in the mood There is a subtle theology being formed in many of us: that God is easier to encounter when the room is right. Dim lights. Candles. A carefully selected playlist. A sustained chord underneath the prayer. We call it ‘setting the atmosphere.’ There is nothing inherently wrong with any of it. The danger is what happens when atmosphere becomes architecture. When we become so accustomed to encountering God through carefully curated environments that we begin to mistake the conditions that move us for the conditions that move Him. God does not need to be put in the mood. The God who met Moses in the wilderness, Elijah in a cave, Paul and Silas in prison, and Stephen beneath flying stones was not responding to ambience. Worship is not an exercise in environmental engineering. Music can serve worship. Beauty can serve worship. Silence can serve worship. A room can be intentionally designed to help people attend to God. But none of these produces His presence. And perhaps this is one of the disciplines our generation must recover: the ability to recognize and respond to God without requiring our senses to be persuaded first. Because if your awareness of God disappears when the music stops, it is worth asking what you were responding to. The presence of God is not the successful outcome of excellent production.
