All kinds of services require a deposit and you lose it if you don't give sufficient notice. Your product is time and if he reserved yours, he either shows up and pays the balance or he loses the deposit.

For me, a deposit is not refundable if I cancel or change my mind, but refundable if it’s a problem with the product/business etc

I had a serious medical situation and messaged my hairdresser the day before apologising that I couldn't make it and was happy to pay a cancellation fee. That kind of man just doesn't respect your time.

You mentioned the cost of makeup ect. Since you are running your own business are these costs eligible for a tax deduction? I assume because it's legal there you have to pay income tax on your earnings, so some sort of a deduction on the costs of running the business?
