GLP-1s during pregnancy? This new data is going to get attention. 🧬🤰 Let’s start with the most important part: Current guidelines do NOT recommend GLP-1 receptor agonists during pregnancy. We simply don’t have enough high-quality safety data to establish their use during pregnancy. But a new 2026 study raises some very interesting questions. Researchers analyzed 36,963 pregnancies, comparing women exposed to GLP-1 receptor agonists with women using other anti-diabetic medications—an important detail, because this wasn’t GLP-1 vs. placebo. What they found: 📉 28% lower odds of adverse maternal outcomes 👶 34% lower odds of preterm birth ✅ No observed increase in major congenital malformations ✅ No observed increase in overall adverse fetal outcomes But here’s the word that matters: ASSOCIATED. This study does not prove GLP-1 medications caused better outcomes. It does not establish that GLP-1s are safe during pregnancy. And it absolutely does not mean someone should continue or start a GLP-1 during pregnancy based on these findings. These are observational data—not randomized clinical trials—and confounding factors can influence the results. So current recommendations haven’t suddenly changed. What makes this research exciting is the question underneath it: Could improving metabolic health BEFORE conception ultimately improve outcomes for both mother and baby? Obesity, insulin resistance, diabetes, and cardiometabolic health don’t suddenly become relevant the day someone gets pregnant. Understanding how metabolic health before conception affects pregnancy may become one of the most important areas of GLP-1 research moving forward. That’s how medicine progresses. One study doesn’t rewrite clinical practice. It gives us a better question to investigate next. 🔬 📚 Kodali et al. JACC: Advances. 2026. Educational purposes only. This is not medical advice. GLP-1 receptor agonists are not currently recommended for use during pregnancy. Anyone who is pregnant, planning pregnancy, or becomes pregnant while taking one should discuss medication management with their healthcare provider. #GLP1 #GLP1Research #Pregnancy #PregnancyHealth #MaternalHealth
