@hayyyfarms: In the development of the modern dairy breeds, humans absolutely bred for higher milk production. But, guess what they also bred for? The ability to handle that higher milk production! Feed efficiency, overall health, body strength, and the ability to hold condition throughout lactation are a few of the biggest things dairy breeders look for when choosing their stock. After all, these traits are essential to supporting the animal that’s providing that milk - and they can only be productive if they’re healthy and fit for the job 💚 #dairygoats #dairyfarm #homestead #farm #goatmilk

The amounts of times I have heard that dairy cows get sent to the slaughter house at 5yo because their bodies have been 'used up' is ridiculous. The farm nearby has about 20% cows 12+. About 70% of their cows are 6+ Even if we just go by money, lifestock that needs to be replaced quickly isn't good. Lifestock that gets sick easily and dies early is bad business.

selective breeding also created corn, so... can we not eat corn? it's so domesticated to the point it can't live and reproduce effectively without human intervention

The person who left that comment has no idea about domestication 😔

not to mention modern feed being very energy efficient and full of nutrients they wouldn't get otherwise. Many people do not understand that dairy animals need to be treated well or they won't produce milk as well, so comfort for the animal is really important, and pain due to artificial breeding counts towards discomfort. The average pug has a way worse life than an artificially bred dairy animal, because having health problems due to selective breeding makes an animal expensive to take care of, therefore not good for farming.

i'm curious, are goats can be used like a meat source? Like, is there a spesific breed for it? Like how there are dairy cows and meat cows? I used to go to farms and never seen it, as in, goats used for meat. (I live in puerto rico, if that helps?) But yeah. Generally curious. And are they any better/more sustainable or not?

also they’re domestic, they don’t worry about predation and finding food, so they’re more calorie efficient than their wild counterparts!
