Why is Ireland not doing the same? 😡 The UK govt announced in September a ban on energy drinks for under 16s - and it’s about time. But frustratingly, a bill introduced in Ireland to ban the sale of energy drinks to under-18s was stalled in May this year! In the legislation, the drinks would be banned in schools, youth clubs and any venue attended by under 18s, and restrictions would be placed on advertising. Similar bans in countries like Lithuania, Latvia, and Hungary have resulted in a drop in consumption among teenagers. The Irish health foundation has criticised the stall saying "There was Govt research 6 years ago highlighting that we've got among the highest consumption of energy drinks in western Europe. There is plenty of evidence out there on the health harms”. Just last year two young men suffered cardiac arrest following excessive consumption of energy drinks and Mater Hospital cardiologist Prof Galvin who treated the men said: “Companies are profiting from energy drinks when evidence shows they’re harming children and young people’s health. This is unacceptable” . The research is there showing the negative effects of energy drink consumption in young people — from sleep disturbance and anxiety to poor concentration, heart issues, and even obesity. Yet every morning, teenagers across Ireland are buying these drinks on their way to school, often instead of breakfast. Teachers have been raising the alarm for years, and nothing is being done. Just one can of Monster contains over 13 teaspoons of sugar and as much caffeine as two to three cups of coffee. And the label even says “not recommended for children” — so why are these drinks still being sold to them? The UK has taken action, but our govt continues to drag its feet. Our govt should be acting as a filter between commercial interests and vulnerable populations in order to protect them… In this instance they are not doing that and we need to shout louder about this. Children’s health should never come second to profit. What do you think? #publichealth
