When i was a kid, I would pray "God, if youre real....". I used to beg for a sign and couldn't understand why it never happened. I later on became a believer and now deconstructing.

Ex-mo here. I remember at 12 years old coming to the conclusion that really the only reason we are all trying to follow the gospel was because we were all scared of hell. It was all self-serving. My seminary teacher did not appreciate my view.

i've asked most of these questions at the age of 12. I looked for the answers going to mass as an altar boy during the week (the other altar boys attended only sunday's masses). reading the old testament increased my doubts. at the time reading voltaire and locke solved them and gave me alternative moral foundations, revealing that our natural empathy (usually) guides us to the good. an early, short and small experience (i did not enrolled a theology university course) quite similar to yours.

I asked all of these questions when I was in the Christian religion and always the answer ended up being I just had to have faith because no one could come up with an actual answer for me.

When I was a child I wondered why God would send to hell those people who hadn't heard about him. I remember thinking, "I'm not God but I wouldn't punish people and send them to hell just because they hadn't heard about me." Boy did I get into trouble with my parents for thinking this way.
