@hifi_deafie: So, I’ve been struggling with my hearing loss the past few months and I’m ready to talk about it. I’ve always been profoundly deaf, but recently I lost even more of the little hearing I had and y’all… I am GRIEVING 😔 This was filmed early in the summer and since then, my hearing has progressively gotten worse. I’ll be sharing more about this in the next couple of weeks. One thing I know for sure is that navigating this hearing loss as a proud Deaf person is complex. More to come ❤️🩹
Girl. Let’s greave. I lost my hearing late in life, so I’ve heard all the wonderful (and terrible) sounds the world has to offer, and I miss it. I miss my mother’s voice. It gets to me when accessibility rears its ugly head. Hearing talking and not including me. Sounds of danger. Why is everyone laughing? Why are people stopping and smiling like they’re listening to someone. Why doesn’t this media have captions? Why won’t my doctor look at me and talk to me instead of the interpreter? Why do shop workers not come to help me like everyone else? It drives me insane. It makes me sad. But, I belong to a community now. I also have professional access in areas Deaf don’t always have access to, and that means I can advocate. It means I can cause change. The thing is, sometimes the community is important and I think it’s worth it. But sometimes I miss all those things I mentioned and wish SO hard I could hear again. I don’t know if it ever gets easier! But I know we got this :)

Grief is really a complex being, people often think losing your hearing is a one time and done deal. What people don’t realised is how complex hearing loss is across the continuum. It’s a different level of grief, knowing you’re losing your remaining hearing all over again, for the second, third time. It’s a continual loss of a part of yourself.
Having said that, grieving for your loss of hearing and still being so proud to be deaf can exist at the same time, it can both be your truths. I know how it feels like and I’m so proud of you for being able to share such vulnerable side to the community. Some days are just such a bumper but do give yourself the time and space to grieve ❤️Sending lots of love in this difficult time, you’re loved and you’re never lesser for feeling this way 🫶🏽

My hearing loss is progressive. I’m learning ASL, but I’m the only person in my family who is deaf. I was a musical theater and opera major before I changed to Audiology (I wanted to help more people like me). Two things can be true at the same time. I love myself and think I’m a better doctor because of my hearing loss. But it’s also hard to loss more and more every year. I’ll get the implant when I qualify. I want to have access to as many things as I can, and I love music so much. I already can’t see well without my glasses. 😔🤟

I so relate to this. I’m in the same boat. I’ve begun to realize that my left ear hearing has deteriorated over the past few months and I’ve been struggling to come to terms with it. I don’t speak or actively listen to people talk to me, but I love music way too much and I don’t know how I’ll be able to cope when my current hearing levels continue to decline as we age…genuinely wish there was an easy way to get that 20 dB!!!

Thank you for sharing your raw and very intimate moment of grief with us. My son is Deaf and LOVES music. Each time we go to the audiologist I hope that his hearing is the same and it doesn’t progress to further loss, not because I want preserve his hearing but because of how much he enjoys music. It’s become a part of him and his escape outside of fast signing hands and blurred voices. It brings him peace and I imagine that’s what it possibly does for you. As a CODA and a mother to a musical loving Deaf son **hugs** to you, hearttouch 🤟🤟

I’m profoundly deaf nearly 90 db and wore HA most of my life. It doesn’t really help. Resists CI and gave away to CI few years ago. OMG the music and other sounds was insane! Sheeet. CI put me up to 15-20 DB range. CI gave me the opportunity to hear stuff like Hearing aids didn’t give me at all.

Hearing Aids 2 yrs - 20, low tones only. Got one side implanted CI, such a vast difference. I took off the hearing aid, it was distorting with the CI. CI gets to be much, so I mostly use it for music. It was worth the decision for me

Yes, exactly I wish I can hear and love my current hearing since 2001. All new hearing aids are not clear still. I love to listen to music 🎶

Girl you are not alone. I too love my Deaf culture, identity, everything but I do crave being able to hear and be able to live life with so much less challenges. Do I want to be hearing 24/7? No. But just give me a bit of hearing.

You’re not alone. I lost all my hearing at age 10 so I empathize with you. It’s a mixed feeling. But being Deaf is great too because look at the amazing community we have. 🫂❤️
