I’ve lived in Rapid City for a few years and I think the lack of third places makes it really difficult to generate any kind of political movement. It’s really just bars and churches and not many opportunities for discussion on differences. There’s also a lot of racism (and sexism) which makes sense to me if you don’t have places you’re coming into contact with people who are different than you. Such an interesting place - and not always in a good way 😅

I live in Rapid City. The Black Hills are magical but yeah definitely a ton of MAGA here. It’s sad.

My wife, Mother-in-Law, and I spent Labor Day Weekend doing about the same. Mount Rushmore is an engineering marvel, but the History of the Black Hills and sacredness of the Land make it, as you said, uncomfortable. Needles Highway is amazing, but you have to have confident driving skills on that road. Spearfish Canyon Highway is also a must, as is the Termesphere Gallery in Spearfish. Many MAGA here, but mostly the duped, not despicable MAGA, imho.

Wondering if you actually engage with any folks in your travels or just keep to yourself. Obviously, not suggesting you start fights with strangers, but getting their perspective/finding common ground seems like it’s one of the most educational/fulfilling parts of travel…

We used to vacation here all the time growing up. I remember seeing Mt. Rushmore at age five or six, thinking “that’s it?” and wanting to go back to the car and play with my My Little Ponies. 😅 My favorite part was always the hotel, and Custer State Park. My sisters special interest was buffalo for a long time and I liked seeing her get excited to see them! 💗
