The parable nobody preaches, hiding one verse before the famous pearl. "The kingdom of heaven is like treasure hidden in a field, which a man found and covered up, and then in his joy he goes and sells all that he has and buys that field" (Matthew 13:44). Two things make it land. First, he wasn't searching. In a world with no banks, burying your valuables in the ground was normal, and sometimes a person crossing a field just found what nobody else had seen. So where the pearl merchant hunted his whole career, this man got ambushed by grace on a Tuesday. Two ways people come to Christ, the lifelong seeker and the one blindsided out of nowhere, and it doesn't matter which you are, because they both sell everything and both go home with it. Second, and this is the word that changes everything, he does it "for joy." Not grimly, not counting the cost, not mourning what he's losing. He sells it all laughing, because when you've actually seen the treasure, giving up everything else isn't a sacrifice, it's the easiest trade you'll ever make. That's the answer to everyone who thinks following Jesus is about giving stuff up. And here's the best part: this treasure isn't passive. He buried himself in an ordinary field on purpose, so that ordinary people crossing ordinary fields could trip over him. You're the finder in this story, the one crossing the field; the treasure is Christ himself, "in whom are hidden all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3), hidden in the middle of an ordinary life, and most people walk right over him a thousand times and never look down.
