Combining National Historic Landmarks with modern transit routes, the system currently features five active lines.   History of the Streetcars Early Beginnings (1835): The system originated with the New Orleans and Carrollton Rail Road, which began as a steam-powered passenger line in 1835 before switching to mule-drawn cars. Electrification (1890s): In 1893, the system converted to electric power, prompting a massive expansion that peaked in the 1920s with over 200 miles of track.   The Bus Era Decline: Between the late 1940s and 1960s, most streetcar tracks were paved over and replaced by diesel buses. Famous routes like the Desire line (immortalized by Tennessee Williams) were converted into bus lines.
