yeah, my mom says the same kind of stuff because it sounds good and like something a "good mother" would say, BUT she says it while intentionally being as much of a burden as possible. She is intentionally destroying her health because she wants to be taken care of like a baby and outright refuses anything that would allow her to be more independent as well as any outside forms of care or assistance. Because it HAS to be me taking care of her and I'm expected to destroy my physical health and mental health to do it and to never have any sort of life outside of her. Then after sabotaging me and herself she'll tell me it's my choice and that I really don't do very much anyway.

When we were cleaning out my grandmother’s home after she died, my mom vowed “not to leave us such a mess to clean up” when she died. It was actually relatively normal. Grandma kept way too many documents, but they were all well organized in a filing cabinet. The basement was a bit cluttered, but it wasn’t too bad. Three years later, Mom died and left us at least 10 times as much stuff to clean up, if we are being charitable. To her credit, her accounts were all in order and easy to handle, but the mountain of stuff is just unreal. We’ve been cleaning for a month and it still looks like a hoarder lives there.

My mother said the same thing! Throughout my life she told me to put her in a home, because she watched my aunt take care of her father-in-law, and she would never want me to go through that. She later denied ever saying that, and insisted she would never want that. One of many lies she told.

The hoarder meme is base of your account but there’re broader issues sneaking in. I’m thinking of ‘estrangement’ scenarios here. Society ‘lauds’ parents as in ‘they’re always right’. Not necessarily. I’m seeing increasing accounts from kids cutting off their parents.
